Don't bother putting up kernel 1.1.77 . That really _does_ break ax25.

I'm using a serial TNC under 1.1.75 and it works. I suspect you may have
gotten a copy of ifconfig with the ax25 functions clobbered, or you didn't
edit arch/i386/config.in to enable AX.25 before configuring the kernel.
Alan did publish one small patch after his last driver version, but I
suspect that would not cause the problem you are reporting.

If necessary, I can send you my copies of ifconfig, route, axattach, and
the kernel drivers.
